Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld Microsoft Ad – Part II

As I discussed early and often, the new work is bad. I mean like really bad. Some people have argued, you need to give it time because that was only the first chapter. Ok, well here is chapter 2:

You can’t be serious? Microsoft paid for this?

So the first work from Crispin Porter + Bogusky breaks for Microsoft.

Seems eerily similar to the work done for American Express with Jerry Seinfeld.

Microsoft’s VP of Online Services & Windows Business Group talks about the ads telling a story. Here’s the problem with story telling via TV; the story has to be interesting and told inside of the alloted time in the spot. If this is supposed to be chapter 1 and we are to wait for chapter 2, 3, 4, etc. to be released in the future; we have a problem. Progressive and episodic story telling doesn’t work for TV. It does work online; case in point BMW Films. I really want the campaign to be great. I’m a Windows fan and a Microsoft advocate. However, right now, the McCann work looks a hell of a lot better.

Microsoft Surface

I’ve been a big fan of Microsoft’s Surface technology platform for a while now.  Unfortunately, there have been very few real world examples to point to.  I came across this demonstration earlier today.

BMW will be using it in their dealerships as a way to feature cars for customers. This is a great example of how companies can start thinking about uses for Surface. The iPhone and Apple have done a great job of conditioning consumers to use, understand, and want touch screen driven devices. With so many people using touch-screen driven tools there really isn’t a learning curve anymore, which opens up the possibilities. So, what would you do with Microsoft Surface?

Microsoft Windows 7

Microsoft Windows 7 is due to ship in 2010. Gosh, 2010, that just sounds cool. Ok, anyhow, CrunchGear offered us some images of what Windows 7 could look like. Keep in mind the operating system is still in development and obviously changes could happen between now and then. That said, it looks damn cool.

Microsoft Picks Crispin

This news is just tragic to me. I’m completely bummed by this situation. Just bummed. Was really pulling for Fallon. Had they won the business this could have been a big turning point for Fallon. I’m just sad.

What Microsoft’s Acquisition of Yahoo! Could Mean

I know you MAC Nazis love to hate on Microsoft, but the reality is that the company has done a lot of good for all of us. The potential acquisition of Yahoo! could be good, if not great news for everyone.

A monopoly generally isn’t very good. Google has continually toed the line between being a bad monopoly and a good monopoly. Unlike most monopolies, Google has found a way to keep innovating. But, let’s be honest…there could always be even more innovation. We’ve become sheep following the good Shepard Google. We walk around in an almost zombie like state letting Google wag us wherever they’d like.

It’s not secret that Microsoft and Yahoo! lag far behind Google in viewership, users, fans, sales, stock price, etc. A Microsoft acquisition should create more competition because Microsoft would be relevant again. That competition would drive both Google and Microsoft to continue innovating. That innovation would benefit the end user and marketers.

This is really exciting news. I’m not sure I really believe this will actually happen, but if it does it could seriously change the face of interactive forever. Very cool!
