Remember When

I’m stealing from myself with the following paragraph I wrote last December:

In one of the greatest episodes of The Sopranos, ironically titled “Remember When” Tony scolds Paulie for looking back and reminiscing. With such disdain he utters, “remember when is the lowest form of conversation.” When I watched this live on HBO, I recall thinking, “damn that was harsh.” But, the more I think about it, I tend to agree with Tony’s feelings…albeit for different reasons. See, I think the reason remember when is lowest form of conversation is because we should have been talking about the moment…while we’re in the moment…instead of waiting 20 years to talk about that moment.  Remembering the moment later on in life instead of giving it the acknowledgement it deserved while it was happening, cheapens the moment…making it the lowest form of conversation.

Well, that’s all fine well and good, but this weekend I got to look through some of my old baby photos and couldn’t believe I was ever this cute.

God, I haven’t aged well. On the plus side though, looking at these photos reinforces that John looks just like me!

Looking Back

One of the things I never do is look back. It gets you nowhere. The perspective is often distorted, just like when you look into a mirror. Memories are never perfect and fade over time. I’m also not a believer that history is a predictor of the future. I’m more of a Blink kinda guy.

For example, when I’m interviewing a candidate I rarely, if ever, look over their resume. The resume only tells me what they think they did. I need to know if they can do what I need them to do. The same holds true for when I inherit a new team. There’s no value in looking at someone’s previous performance reviews. All they tell me is what someone else thought of them. What if that manager was just a bad manager and unable to get maximum potential from their staff?  Well, if that happened, the performance review is tainted.  Nope, when I inherit a team, everyone gets a fresh start.

Like so many things, I follow the same mentality in my personal life that I do in my professional life.  There’s just no value in looking back.  Well, there’s no value in looking back if you want to look forward.  If you’re focused on what can be, instead of what was, there’s no value in looking back.  Looking back is dangerous.  It holds you back and keeps you stuck in neutral.  Life is no fun when you’re in neutral.

Don’t you want to be going somewhere?  Well, if you do, my advice to you is stop looking back and start plotting your course forward.  Oh and grab yourself a navigator; going forward is a hell of a lot more fun when you’ve got someone to take the ride with you.

Wow Adam And Cora In A Photo

It happens every once in a while, but Adam does find time to get out from behind the camera and actually make it into a photo.  This was taken on Sunday September 20, 2009.  Beautiful weather, beautiful day, beautiful girl.

Our 5th Wedding Anniversary

We spent our 5th wedding anniversary in Cancun, Mexico.  Cancun holds a special place in our heart because it’s the place we got engaged on June 5, 2002 and it’s where we spent our 3rd anniversary when Cheryl was pregnant with Cora.

Originally, we had planned to spend our 5th anniverary in Las Vegas, NV.  However, the insane costs of Vegas coupled with the amazing deal we got via Expedia helped guide us back to Cancun.  Instead of staying at the Westin Regina (where we’ve stayed in the past) we decided to stay at the all inclusive GR Royal Solaris.  It was a great choice.  Unlimited food and liquor is never a bad thing.

With this being our 3rd time in Cancun together, it was really tough to figure out what to do.  We’d been to Chitinitza, Isla Mujeres, done some parasailing, and shopped a ton.  Outside of just kicking back on the beach, something that’s very difficult for Adam to do, we took the Jungle Tour for the first time.  There’s a picture from the excursion below.  That was really the only new thing we did.  It was the familiar favorites that we really relished.  We shopped a Plaza Kulkulcan and La Isla.  We ate dinner at Cambalache and this little whole in the wall taco place that we ate at the night we got engaged.  Of course, we also ate at the Captain’s Cove, where Cheryl enjoyed a Banana Monkey.  Basically, we were right at home.

It was tough to come back after 5 days, but it was also great to see Cora again.  She stayed with Grandpa and Grandma Iverson while we were away.

A few select photos are below and the entire gallery can be seen here.

This is the front of our hotel, the GR Royal Solaris. We highly recommend it.

It's rare that I make an appearance in photos on trips. Usually I'm too busy taking them. I really liked the casual and simple nature of this photo. Cheryl did a great job capturing it.

We took the so-called "Jungle Tour." It basically consists of driving a speed boat 30 minutes to a huge reef. You snorkel for about 45 minutes and then head back. We had a great time driving fast and checking out the underwater life.

When we came down to Cancun for our 3rd anniversary, the Captains Cove was closed due to construction from the hurricanes. It was open this time around and we made sure to eat dinner their on our anniversary. The coconut shrimp were as amazing as we remembered from June 2002; when we got engaged.

Adam and Cora on the Porch

It took about 1,000 takes, but we finally got a decent photo of Cora and Adam.  Not a bad way to celebrate the birthday.

Happy Birthday to Adam

Yes, another year in the books.  I feel older and lord knows I look older.  This last year has been great.  New house, new job, new state, and a new car.  I’d say it’s been pretty jam packed.  I celebrated a day early with a Dairy Queen cake.  No matter how old I get, I still love a good ice cream cake.
