Running - Day 1
So I finally made it out for my first run. I had planned to start running on August 4th, my birthday. However due to some gear arriving late, getting sick, and work travel I wasn’t able to find the time. This was my first run using Nike+. I have to say, it worked really well. The Nike Lunar Trainer shoes were outstanding and the Sennheiser PMX70 headphones were better than advertised. So the gear was great, but I wasn’t. The last time I actually ran a real 5K race was in 1996. I ran a 19:27, which is a 6:15 per mile pace. My personal best is somewhere in the neighborhood of 16:12. Tonight was not quite that. You can see the results here.
So I’m basically 25% worse than I wa 11 years ago. Actually, that’s not too bad. My goal is to get up to about a 25 mile a week base and get back to the 6:15 per mile average for a 5K. We’ll see.
oh, i envy you. the universe does not want me to run this year, if i believed in all that new age crap. i started the year with all the best laid plans. then i got hit by a car (nothing serious, but the very, very start of 2008 was rung in with an ankle sprain. i was lucky, really lucky). then i had a bad tooth infection that spread to my head, and you don’t need an MD degree to know brain infections are not a party. then it’s just been a summer of really bad tendinitis and now plantar fasciitis too. i got these cool ankle braces this weekend that cost me an arm and a leg (ha!) but they help a lot, only i had them on so tight that my legs needed today off just to regain feeling! meanwhile my running shoes feel like that rubber ducky on the Johnsons baby wipes commercial! so much for my best laid plans. good luck with the running! i’ll be checking back to see how that’s going. i’m so pissed i have to miss this year’s Moonlight Run (*the* place to be on a Friday’s harvest moon night here in Palo Alto).
