I’m really proud of the work we did for the Take Me Fishing campaign. All of the work, across all of the marketing channels is very good. The print looks great. Ditto on the direct. The spots we shot are fantastic and web site is amazing.
We just came out of usability testing and the site passed with flying colors. One of the things everybody seemed to really like was the Fishopedia. The Fishopedia was a brand new section of the site we concepted, created, and developed to be the A to Z compendium for fishing. It covers How to Fish, educates you on types of fish, helps you understand which equipment to choose, and offer much more. From step by step animations to detailed facts this is the place to go to for information on fishing.
So whether you are an avid or first time angler check out the Fishopedia.
I really do love Wordpress. It’s simple, flexible, and makes my life easier. It’s everything a “service” should be. Today I changed my theme 6 times, edited the templates each time, updated the CMS each time, and when applicable revised the home page header images. Not too freaking bad at all; especially when you consider I did this all in an hour.
Web 2.0 is a silly name that for some reason we keep using even thought it makes no sense. 2.0 signifies an evolution. 2.0 is a “new release” or an upgrade. 2.0 is used when we move from something 1.0. For example when we go from Adobe Photoshop 1.0 to 2.0.
The web, by my estimation is only evolution #7.
Web 1.0: Telnet based setups
Web 2.0: Usenet/BBS setups
Web 3.0: CompuServe and Prodigy With Browser Based Navigation
Web 4.0: AOL and the Prominence of Peer to Peer Chat and Chat Rooms
Web 5.0: eCommerce Takes Shape
Web 6.0: Peer to Peer File Sharing
Web 7.0: Shift from Destination to Application Oriented Sites (eg Facebook)
This doesn’t even account for things like then-Macromedia Flash, the browser wars, Mobile Web, etc.
The problem with Web 2.0 is that it dumbs us all down. We’re smart, we’re savvy, and to term today was Web 2.0 over-simplifies the evolution of the web.
Web 2.0 is a gimmicky name that was created to:
1. Sell things
2. Avoid the discussion about evolution
I can’t resist smirking, smiling, laughing, and saying, “I Told You So.” This Ad Age article tells the particulars. I think this was a case of Nike thinking the grass might be greener on the other side. It’s not the first time they’ve tried dancing with another partner. Me thinks they’ll come crawling back to W+K. The killer was this quote by Alex Bogusky in this month’s FastCompany regarding his opinion of the Nike work, “I think everyone wants to see the work get better than it is.”
Perhaps if the work had more soul like the new work for New Balance they’d have kept it.
Keep in mind, this isn’t about hating on Cripsin Porter + Bogusky. They do great work sometimes and sometimes they don’t. That fact makes them just like everyone else. They get so much negative attention because they essentially beg for it based on the way they carry themselves. Never toot your own horn; let someone else do it for you.
Stumbled upon this site last week and have been playing around with it since. Instead of returning text-based results, it serves up visuals to show you what’s relevant. The functionality for navigating the results is very similar to the album browsing feature on the iPod Touch/iPhone. Check it out.
If you have ever worked on the client side of the business or been witness to the watering down of the “end product” you need to read this article by Avinash Kaushik. He breaks down the reason for why so many web sites “suck.” It all comes down to the HIPPO factor: highest paid person’s opinion. Truer words have not been spoken. Thank you Avinash for saying this so bluntly.
1. Charles makes a lot of money
2. Charles ran up a $400,000 tab that was not paid
3. Charles claims he didn’t realize he owed the money to the Wynn Hotel
4. The Wynn Hotel instead of handling this situation quietly filed charges with the District Attorney
5. Charles paid the $400,000
So think about this. What damage did the Wynn Hotel do to it’s brand by pursuing Barkely in this manner? If you are a high roller, do you really want gamble at the Wynn? Why would you gamble at a place that clearly doesn’t value YOUR privacy? I know I wouldn’t.
